Doc Films says…

Doc Films' ongoing love affair with Yasujiro Ozu continues tonight with a screening of the Japanese director's criminally underrated gem Late Autumn. The perfectly-framed film (every scene is a vision) follows a trio of older gentleman as they try to help their late friend's widow by marrying off her beautiful young daughter, Ayako. But their meddlesome, if well-intentioned, ways are met with resistance as the young girl rejects their matchmaking efforts and plans to remain living with her sweet mother. Gentle intergenerational conflict takes center stage as the old-fashioned men try to keep Ayako from becoming an "old maid" while she proclaims in quiet, '60s-era feminist-fashion that "life is still worthwhile" without a man or marriage.
