PJ Harvey & John Parish

The fact that PJ Harvey can release an all-originals collaboration and have it play like a solo retrospective is a pretty strong testament to her force of personality. A Woman a Man Walked By, her second album with John Parish, is PJ for all seasons — postmodern Patti Smith, tomboy sexpot, Gothic balladeer, and everything in between. Chalk-y banjo dirges ("Sixteen, Fifteen, Fourteen") bleed into the primal Rid of Me genderf*ck of the title track. You're all but guaranteed not to hear "50ft Queenie" or "Down by the Water," but it just might play like Harvey's greatest, nonetheless.
