Stephen Sondheim set Follies at the 30-year reunion of the Weismann Follies, a Broadway musical revue based on Flo Ziegfeld's real-life equivalent. Ostensibly the tale of two couples participating in the reunion, it's also a love letter to American musical theatre itself, replete with songs in the styles of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter. Rarely produced due to its challenging score and dark subject matter, Follies won seven Tony Awards in its original Broadway incarnation. This ambitious non-Equity production, in turn, features a volunteer cast with Broadway experience — for less than the price of parking at a Loop theater.
