Facets Night School returns with a midnight screening and discussion of William Greaves' avant-garde classic Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One. The pseudo-documentary film — an early progenitor of classic mockumentaries like This Is Spinal Tap — follows the making of a vaguely defined "feature-length we-don't-know-what." Greaves himself stars as a bumbling, sexist filmmaker who directs cameras to film his actors, himself directing the actors, and the general film-within-a-film chaos. The delightfully meta, self-referential plot makes it difficult to discern what's real and what's fiction, prompting a host of questions as to Greaves' true intent. But whatever the director's ultimate objective, the experimental film remains a hilarious, absurdist gambol behind the scenes of a possibly fake movie — and a landmark of American New Wave cinema.
