Metric doesn't rely on any extraneous instrumentation to win you over, bucking indie rock's trend toward overindulgent "growers" in favor of new wave's predilection for simple hooks and instant gratification. Singer Emily Haines commands each song, her ubiquitous voice often harmonizing with itself while the band's other members jockey for space. Every rhythm is insistent, every bass-line driving, but Haines' composed vocals leave the impression that Metric never breaks a sweat — though the audience almost certainly will. Sebastien Grainger opens, and once again reminds you, please, no texting in the front row.
