As any radio host can attest, telling an interesting story that holds an audience's attention — without visual aids like props or images — is no easy feat. Indeed, in our ADD-addled world, using language, vocalizations, and physical movements to relay a compelling narrative and pique the listener's imagination is quickly becoming a lost art (Ira Glass notwithstanding). This week, screw the TV and celebrate the myriad joys of oral storytelling at the SKALD 10 Storytelling Festival ("skald" refers to an ancient Scandinavian poet, bard, or storyteller). The weeklong event, now in its tenth year, features workshops on yarn spinning and competitions open to professional orators and amateur raconteurs alike. WBEZ's Steve Edwards hosts.
