Believe Inn says…

David Horvitz draws inspiration from "rabble-rousers, mischief makers, saboteurs," and other kinds of rascally figures, and his retooled version of '60s-style conceptual art is undeniably playful. Yet, there's an earnest side to his ephemeral, idea-based projects, which he often records with a camera. In works like "How to Exit a Photograph" and "Disappearing" (a video of the artist walking off into the fog), Horvitz seems to be examining his place in the world, while plying notions of distance and presence. There's an existential ring to it, in the manner of Bas Jan Ader, to whom he pays homage. Horvitz also renews the non-commercial ethos of some of his conceptualist precursors, through tactics like free downloads or newsprint editions of his photographs.
