Most musicians, even the best of them, rarely feel comfortable straying from the time-worn thematic territories that have been inspiring songs for generations. Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson's muse prompts compositions of a thoroughly different ilk. Jóhannsson dedicates his stark, crescendo-laden paeans to early IBM computer models and failed South American factory towns funded by Ford Motors. The concepts may be eccentric, but Jóhannsson's stately compositions are as moving as any motivated by more familiar motifs. His lofty strings, eerie choral passages, and gentle electronic flourishes tease out such genuine feeling that you'll forget that the music is inspired by Henry Ford's plan for cheaply cultivated rubber.
