The Dutchess and the Duke aren't the first garage punks to throw their fuzzboxes into the attic, turn down the gain, and go acoustic (see John Doe, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, et al). But where these types of U-turns usually end up in Delta blues or gothic-country territory, Kimberly Morrison and Jesse Lortz somehow come closer to Carnaby Street. On their Hardly Art debut, there's no trace of the no-wave art-damage Morrison ground out in the Intelligence, or the snot-punk of Lortz's Fe Fi Fo Fums — just deceptively simple '60s folk-pop featuring plenty of early Jagger sneers and mod harmonies.
