So the end is near. Different cultures have felt this way for ages, with the myths and prophecies to prove it, but we seem to be convinced that our present moment is looking particularly dark. That mindset is the backdrop for Signs of the Apocalypse/Rapture, a large survey of recent artworks dealing with themes of impending doom and blissful transcendence, often irresolutely intertwined. Curated by the Chicago-based Front Forty Press after its book project of the same name, the exhibition features 35 local and international artists, including Sebastiaan Bremer, Julie Mehretu, Emilio Perez, Julie Heffernan, and Nicola Verlato. A few works are even made fresh for the show, among them new wall drawings by Hisham Bharoocha and Andrew Schoultz.
