Named after the hack whose best known opus begins with the words "It was a dark and stormy night," the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest is an annual competition whose entrants vie to write the worst possible opening sentence of a novel. In that spirit, Stage Left Theatre's DrekFest is a national search for America's worst ten-minute play. (To be clear, it's talented playwrights intentionally trying to drag their art form to new lows.) Finalists include "Scarecrow" or Some Shit, Call It Whatever You Fucking Want I Don't Care and Someone Has to Die Tonight, Indeed He Does. DrekFest is a winking celebration of bad writing in all its cringeworthy glory and a loving swipe at the sometimes ridiculous process of developing new works of art.
