Grant Park says…

The nation of Freedonia is in bad shape at the opening of Duck Soup. The country is fiendish, war-hungry, and nearly bankrupt, so the president — played by Groucho Marx in peak form — attempts to fix the situation by borrowing a cool $20 million from rich widow Mrs. Teasdale (a game Margaret Dumont). When a neighboring ambassador gets in the way, the absurdity starts to mount. With Chico and Harpo as enemy spies, and a cavalcade of classical routines and musical numbers, this political satire is one of the Marx Brothers' most-beloved movies. Released at the dawn of Hitler's reign, the brothers' takedown of overarching hubris is still hilarious, and still resonant.
