Imagine if the person with whom you were in love didn't even know you existed. In the Chinese adaptation of Stefan Zweig's 1922 novella Letter From an Unknown Woman, we see the effects of love lost and forgotten as a wealthy writer (Jiang Wen) receives a heart-bearing letter from a former lover. Director Xu Jinglei allows us to sympathize with the lead, despite his inability to remember the woman he so deeply effected. With cinematography that colors the World War II era with romance and delicate sincerity, Letter is as visually stunning as it is emotional.
