Like any good post-apocalyptic children's film, Pixar's Wall-E opens with a bleak presentation of Earth, decimated and discarded by its own civilizations. Even to world-weary eyes that survived R-rated movies, the wordless minutes are profoundly shocking cinema. The film then follows a simple love story between two robots, set against a cautionary tale of a gluttonous humanity's break-up with its delicate environment. The film's success had many speculating that it could be the first animated film to nab a Best Picture Academy Award nomination. It didn't, and there were a few haters. Despite the ideological criticism, recent events nod toward the film's speculative future. It gives seeing the film outdoors a sense of immediacy, doesn't it?
