Kari Lydersen: Revolt on Goose Island
-
- Kari Lydersen, Revolt on Goose Island
When union workers at Chicago's Republic Windows and Doors were abruptly laid off in December — just days before the faltering company was to shutter its doors, due in part to Bank of America's denial of credit — they refused to vacate the factory until they were paid the vacation and severance owed them. The six-day factory occupation (the first American sit-down in nearly 75 years) garnered national attention and became, in many respects, a potent symbol of the brewing populist rage among American workers during the economic downslide. This evening, Washington Post journalist Kari Lydersen discusses her new book, Revolt on Goose Island, which details the workers' peaceful protest and their underreported victory. Labor rights advocate Danny Postel hosts a Q&A with Lydersen following the reading/discussion.
