Since their first arrival on the freak-folk scene in 2002, Brooklyn's Akron/Family have been voracious experimentalists, blending jazz meanderings and proggy rhythms with their signature vocal harmonies. The band — now a trio after the departure of founding member Ryan Vanderhoof two years ago — delve even further into the psychedelic abyss with the recently-released Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free. The album kicks off with a Stevie Wonder-meets-Jethro Tull freak-out and detours into certifiable noise-rock insanity before melting into blissfully simple gospel-tinged tracks. During their last stop in Chicago, the Family invited audience members on stage to jam and the show delightfully devolved into a sweaty, kindergartenesque singalong. At tonight's show, we're hoping to get handed the cowbell.
