William Friedkin's fact-based classic The French Connection still trumps the modern-day, testosterone-drenched cop flick. Detective Popeye Doyle (Gene Hackman) comes across every bit as reckless as the pusher he pursues — illustrated perfectly in the elaborately staged car chase, arguably the best ever filmed. Doyle weaves in and out of traffic following an elevated train, narrowly missing the civilians in his path. Even in this era of explosions and digital effects, the stunt work here still leaves you breathless. Based on the real-life French Connection busts of the '60s, the film explodes with the kind of style Friedkin has spent the rest of his career trying to recapture.
