The Wrens have been promising a new album for ages, but it might actually be just around the corner — well, maybe. The band's hardscrabble history is legendary: after a brush with success in the '90s, the Wrens battled through prolonged label limbo (and day jobs), rising as both lauded indie-rock elders and perennial underdogs. The linchpin of the tale is The Meadowlands, their remarkably great 2003 record, seven years in the making. An unflinching look at life's disappointments, the album is nonetheless galvanizing, full of driving guitars and high-energy hooks. It's proof that a comeback can be glorious, and not just a pitiful echo. We're waiting all over again, sure enough, but their tour is good reason to keep the fires burning.
