Our usual introductions to the history of 20th-century art tend to lean on certain narratives — the subversive march of the avant-garde, for instance, or a progression of movements, each one superseding the last. Constellations turns away from that kind of linear thinking and the compulsion to chronologize. Featuring paintings by 75 artists, the exhibition is arranged in thematic clusters that skip lightly across multiple decades. Each of the constellations teases out a different preoccupation or approach that painters have adopted time and again. A large gathering of excellent works (reason enough to go), the show welcomely features a number of Chicago artists: Kerry James Marshall, Judy Ledgerwood, and Vera Klement, among others, appear confidently alongside heirs of international fame like Gerhard Richter and Chuck Close.
