Sandwiched between Mean Street's bleak gangster drama and Taxi Driver's unsettling tale of a lonely urban man's descent into insanity, Italianamerican is Martin Scorsese's sweet, carefree documentary about his parents. The little-seen 16mm film — unavailable on DVD — features Catherine and Charles Scorsese in their New York apartment swapping stories on their life together. A delight from start to finish, the brief 50-minute doc looks on as Scorsese's charming, if domineering, mother and reserved, wisecracking father (fast-talkers and fabulous storytellers both) share old family photographs, their immigrant experience, and tips on proper Italian cooking (the film even launched a Scorsese family cookbook). It's a fascinating peek into Scorsese's lighter side — and a fun glimpse into Italian-American heritage.
