Thanks to the Mekons' strong local ties, Chicago is graced with fairly regular performances from the band's many side projects and solo offshoots, especially longtime member Sally Timms and co-founder Jon Langford. They're always inspired performances (see the recent SHELebration or last year's holiday panto), but a full Mekons gig is something truly special — old pros mining a dizzyingly diverse catalog, marked by both decades-hewn ease and a born-in artistic restlessness. They've gone from art school amateurism to post-punk country (the epochal Fear and Whiskey); caustically slick rock to relaxed folk. It's anyone's guess where their in-the-works follow-up to 2007's largely-acoustic Natural will take things. But with the Mekons, being kept on your toes is half the fun.
