Richie Hawtin's mixes don't impel you to dance, they coax you to. A minimal-techno luminary from its formative days (when he went by the nom de musique Plastikman), Hawtin possesses an uncanny knack for combining the cutting edge and the classic, creating what could be described as Frankenstein-like tracks — were it not so difficult to spot the seams. Look at any entry in his DE9 series for evidence that Hawtin is a visionary sequencer, his sets single-mindedly pursuing a consistency of tone (instead of searching for that next big transition to elicit a response from his audience). Openers, and fellow Ableton-wielders, Barem and Ambivalent set the tone for the night when they unleash their own fastidiously constructed mixes.
