Sunset Rubdown, the unusually justified and ultra-prolific side project of Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug, performs material with the kind of unabashed emotional intensity that seems to come so naturally to Canadian musicians. His songs deal with mythologized romances, fantasized places where lovers have wings, grow horns, and contain the spirit of Icarus in their blood. Krug's ambitious musical melodramas usually sprawl into the five-plus-minute territory, his quavering, yelping voice accompanied by layers of instruments that, for a band modestly billing itself as indie rock, are rarely limited to the traditional guitar-bass-drums combo.
