The Lesser Birds of Paradise are not a cool band, but that's not what they're gunning for. The Birds' songs don't fall in line with going trends, instead finding sanctuary in sparse, predominately acoustic arrangements. Lead singer Mark Janka is the kind of guy who writes music designed to soundtrack stuff like a long-distance relationship that suddenly goes sour, his songs occupying that space between melancholia and romantic longing that is the province of the perpetually lovelorn. The music succeeds because it refrains from attempting anything more ambitious than the careful articulation of a bittersweet memory — a modest goal, but one that is easily within Janka's reach.
