At first listen, Baby Teeth's new album Hustle Beach — which is fêted at tonight's show — may sound like a semi-camp regurgitation of classic soft rock staples. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) But on closer inspection, the local trio's third full-length is less an ironic, tongue-in-cheek gag than an earnest homage to Top 40 radio hits from the '70s and '80s. Paying tribute to the smooth-groovin' jams of Hall and Oates, Harry Nilsson's laidback glamour, and even Todd Rundgren's swoon-worthy croons, the album's irresistibly catchy tunes are glittering, pitch-perfect nostalgia for folks who just can't give up their old Steely Dan records. And who would want to, anyway?
