The History Boys treads familiar ground, following a band of students and the teachers who light their way — but Alan Bennett's sharp-eyed play isn't simply a Dead Poets Society for the British set. It's funnier, for one thing, filled with rambunctious diversions and incisive dialogue; and churning beneath its veneer of knowing charm are potent moral ambiguities and clashing world views. It's a marvel that a mid-size theatre like TimeLine scored the Chicago premiere of such a major play — one that racked up awards in London and New York — but the company makes it feel like The History Boys was tailor-made for it.
