Overturning the usual alien invasion scenario, District 9 recasts a million extraterrestrial visitors as refugees, confined to a slum in Johannesburg. With the big-league support of Peter Jackson, South African director Neill Blomkamp overhauls an action movie as a brazen allegory, with a quasi-documentary style and an anti-hero in the lead. It seems the strangest kind of miracle that the film is on the verge of a box office coup. District 9 is a provocative movie, ready to fuel conversation all summer, but it's also thoroughly intense and unflinchingly violent. Handheld camerawork and visceral sound design amplify the emotional rawness, and even when the film strays into shoot-'em-up terrain, reveling in its firepower a little too readily, it never quite feels like blithe entertainment.
