A weird all-ages vs. 18-plus dichotomy has played out in many artists' careers: Ice Cube went from "Straight Outta Compton" to Are We There Yet? Tom Kenny balanced Spongebob with Mr. Show's subversive sketch comedy. And Shel Silverstein wrote songs grumbling about both homework and STDs. But even though Paul Zaloom had been doing scathing performance art long before hosting the kiddie science show Beakman's World, newbies might still do a double take when they see his stage show. Taking on hot-button political issues like gay adoption and the war on drugs, Zaloom uses puppets, found objects, and provocative stagecraft to spin subversive one-man theater. Imagine Bill Nye ditching the lab coat and dancing on the third rail.
