When Neil Hamburger bills himself as "America's $1 Funnyman," he's inviting audiences to stay away, knowing they'll come back for more. Gregg Turkington's self-consciously pathetic, brawling stand-up persona pushes the same buttons as Andy Kaufman alter-ego Tony Clifton did 30 years ago — both resemble lounge singers and are prone to anxious bouts of belligerence. Hamburger has found favor with the indie-rock set in recent years, releasing several so-bad-it's-good comedy albums on Drag City. But even with the whole room in on the joke, Hamburger's self-loathing sleazebag can still make crowds wince, so pitiless is his mockery.
