Under Milk Wood began as a radio play by Dylan Thomas, and adapted for the stage, the music of language still reigns supreme. As the cast ebulliently describes the doings of a Welsh town — from pre-dawn dreams to drunks carousing after dark — the play feels like poetry in motion. A nosy postman trades places with a sailor pining for his youthful conquests, and a curmudgeon reads about "the great poisoners of history" as he eyes his wife. Of course, Thomas wrote the piece to be heard, not seen, so its success in the flesh was far from assured. The actors alleviate any doubts by switching characters in a swirl of activity, with subtle changes in costume and comportment differentiating the denizens.
