Some of the more memorable artworks of recent years have been immersive, meticulously constructed environments (see Mike Nelson, or Marfa's Hello Meth Lab in the Sun). Nevertheless, room-swallowing installations are a relatively rare species in Chicago. While that's partially a matter of funding, the work of Michael Ruglio-Misurell attests that you don't need lavish resources to pull it off. Balancing order and chaos, his Project #12 fills Gallery 400 with piled-up wreckage, make-shift dwellings, even uprooted urinals. Details within the aestheticized devastation provide the kernel of a narrative: squatters have taken up residence in a ruined food court. This scenario gives the work an open-ended quality, evoking economic decline or the plight of the homeless along with the aftermath of natural disasters.
