The Chicago-based DIY music collective Opera Cabal opens a mini-run of preview performances with tonight's interpretation of the Schoenberg masterpiece "Pierrot Lunaire," one of the great cornerstones of Western chamber music. Cabal director Nick DeMaison conducts a small ensemble of woodwinds, strings, and piano, accompanied by mimed movements, vocals, and video projection. The classic tale of Pierrot, the sad clown in the Commedia dell'Arte, is parlayed through 21 poems, delivered in the characteristic Sprechstimme sing-speak of Schoenberg's original. Space is limited, so please RSVP beforehand.
