It's a perplexing thing when a great band is met with critical antipathy. But as mystifying as their less-than-enthusiastic reviews have been (someone at Pitchfork must hate frontman Bobby Hecksher), there's no question that the Warlocks' new album, The Mirror Explodes, is a superior effort from a criminally overlooked outfit. The blissed-out My Bloody Valentine-meets-Velvet Underground aesthetic that Hecksher has refined over the last ten years (the band's name is actually taken from one of the Velvets' earlier monikers) is melded with sweeping layers of reverbed vocals, impenetrable guitar drones, and glorious walls of distortion. Brimming with psych-rock fuzz and shoegaze shimmer, the album's gorgeous songs seem to drift together into one endless, epic jam.
