Toronto may not have quite the foothold on indie rock it did, say, eight years ago, but if the fanfare has dwindled it's certainly not any fault of the Most Serene Republic. Since their '05 debut, the septet has released a string of sweepingly romantic records for Arts & Crafts, each more finely arranged and ambitious than the last. MSR continues its winning streak with …And the Ever Expanding Universe, a sharp mix of pensive instrumentals and pop sing-alongs driven by Adrian Jewett and Emma Ditchburn's vocal interplay. Try the standout "Heavens to Purgatory," a beguiling shuffle of banjo and chimes, stop-starting around bursts of harmony-drenched catharsis.
