Luis Gispert got the art world's attention by retooling elements of street culture and proposing that hip-hop is today's Baroque. However, Gispert regularly reorients his practice; his new large-scale video installation exchanges the refined sensationalism of his last outing (Smother) for a more subdued, quasi-neorealist approach. Projected across three synchronized channels, Rene portrays the daily routine of one of the artist's Cuban friends in Miami. Also included in the exhibition are two sculptures and monumental photographs that put us in the cockpit of different vehicles — seats of power ranging from a B-17 bomber to an Escalade with Louis Vuitton trimmings. Outside each windshield, Gispert has digitally added a panoramic landscape, resulting in both dissonance and a Cinemascope-like grandeur.
