Black skies, ashen snow, and solitude: these are the ingredients of a fading world. In painstakingly rendered graphite drawings, Robyn O'Neil charts a dark territory that brings to mind the one Cormac McCarthy imagined in The Road. Yet this isn't quite McCarthy's terse march through doom's door. The Houston-based artist mixes a touch of mystery with her ominousness and imbues the landscape with mystical energy. In a number of works, a small figure appears within expansive terrain as the night sky churns overhead like an ocean of shadowy waves. Meanwhile, two drawings of a man's back-turned head suggest internal journeys to match the geographic odysseys. Graphite is the perfect atmospheric medium for this, allowing both delicacy and heaviness, deep darkness and shades of gray.
