Independent film production has existed at least since the trust-busting days of D.W. Griffith, but the indie film, as we know it today, began with John Cassavetes. And while Shadows (1959) may be his Year Zero template-tosser, A Woman Under the Influence is Cassavetes at his most affecting and socially conscious. In a revolutionary performance, Gena Rowlands plays the titular housewife, suffocating under domestic ritual, insecurity, and chemical dependency; but her alternately ineffectual and macho husband (Peter Falk) often seems the more unstable of the two. A character-driven masterwork, Woman is an unnervingly emotional portrait of dysfunction that never topples over into bathos.
