“An unsurprisingly brainy and gratifying bio-historical musical from the writers of Urinetown, Yeast Nation re-imagines prehistoric Earth's primordial soup as an epic world ripe for romance and tragedy. A cast of yeast cells play out archetypal stories of love and loss, oppression and revolution — with consistently satisfying musical numbers. ATC's production brings the camp (a disco ball makes an appearance just before intermission) and the perfect amount of flippancy, making the show's self-reference to musicals' absurdity hit just the right note. There are even some surprisingly poignant and timely themes of sustainable living that emerge without self-righteousness.”
An evolutionary new rock musical from the Tony Award-winning creators of Urinetown
The world’s first family, a colony of salt-eating yeasts, float in the brine of the primordial soup under the rule of a tyrannical baritone. When resources deplete and fear pervades, the faith of a single-celled dreamer starts an evolutionary chain reaction that changes the course of existence forever.
