Less winking than Velvet Goldmine and more rib-sticking than Rocky Horror, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the ultimate glam-rock cult flick. The starry-eyed, gender-f*cked Hedwig faces one obstacle after another — a botched sex-change operation, a song-swiping backstabber — with indefatigable optimism. John Cameron Mitchell (who also co-wrote and directed) is as convincing in front of the camera as behind it, playing Hedwig with both sympathetic grace and, um, cocky élan. No surprise, the midnight circuit has embraced Mitchell's loving portrait of the original hot tranny mess: tonight's screening features a Rock Horror-like, interactive shadowcast.
