Over the course of six stylistically nomadic records, Norwegian singer/songwriter Sondre Lerche has gone from prodigy to pro. His debut Faces Down and sophomore Two Way Monologue — which mix jazz, folk, and Brill Building— already displayed a pop intellect that belied his youth. Lerche's latest, this year's Heartbeat Radio, also integrates the slick, nervy rock of his underappreciated Phantom Punch and the sophisti-jazz of his Duper Sessions. The result is a stylistic fusion that genre-jumpers like Lerche rarely settle down to make — and a studio record that plays like a Greatest Hits. Live, his deceptively complex melodies and vocal brio provoke an almost hyper-romantic swoon.
