Among the many artists to reflect on globalization and its discontents, few do so with the critical sophistication and sustained focus of Allan Sekula. His rigorous projects often culminate in a sequence of color photographs paired with written texts, providing both a multi-faceted look at "everyday life in the grip of advanced capitalism" and a critique of documentary photography itself. Dodging the overly abstract or academic, Sekula anchors his works in the experience of a specific community. For Polonia and Other Fables, the artist investigates Chicago's history of labor as it relates to the city's Polish immigrants and the influential economists affiliated with the University of Chicago.
