After platooning with bands like Vetiver and the Shins over the last few years, native Chicagoan Eric Johnson re-dons the Fruit Bats moniker in support of his third Sub Pop release, The Ruminant Band. Johnson's Cali-style folk feels more immediate than ever and his latest flock of hook-laden ringers sound equally comfortable in the barroom and around the campfire. Try the aptly titled "Primitive Man" (one of many barn-burning rave-ups) or the title track's laid-back country swagger. With boogie piano and pedal steel offering a welcome howdy to acoustic-bashed hootenannies, these smiley, rural jams are an ideal hat-tip to end-of-summer wistfulness.
