Brooklyn trio the Antlers go the way of Bon Iver with guitar-led, simplistic melodies and tales of pain. (Their 2009 release Hospice unravels the allegory of watching a loved one die of cancer.) Last seen in Chicago plucking eerie melodies at the Pitchfork Music Festival, the band departs from the indie-folk mold through its experimentation with more sound. The distortion, layered vocals, and languid keyboards may break your heart, but will also leave you with the impression that bitter winters yield hopeful springs.
