When Phoenix's bomb-emblazoned Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix dropped this summer, it set off the combustible realization that the French foursome are getting better and better. After a couple of albums with a cloying crooner feel, they released It's Never Been Like That (2006), a breakthrough set of muscular pop jogging along on crisp drumbeats. On Wolfgang, something clicked again. The band still relies on taut, burnished pop to provide a svelte core, but driving rhythm guitar, king-sized choruses, and hey-hey shouts up the ardor. The opening salvo of "Lisztomania" and "1901" gets things going with a veritable call to go running through the streets with fists pumping in the air.
