For all the attention showered on Iran for the government's nuclear posturing, political crackdowns, and other media-magnetic topics, not much trickles out about the country's cultural life. Iran Inside Out, an exhibition of contemporary Iranian art organized by New York's Chelsea Art Museum, presents a different set of views, courtesy of artists living in the homeland and across the diaspora. Ranging from life-sized watercolor portraits to narrative videos and satirical photo-collages, their works address subjects like everyday street life, religious hierarchies, and US hegemony. But it's the more traditional documentary photographs that might shake up fixed ideas most: one series chronicles female police cadets in training, another focuses on the officially sanctioned transgender population.
