Throwback soul may not have the same momentum it did even a year ago, but when it has the heart of a Mayer Hawthorne, that retro groove sounds eternally in style. On his Stones Throw debut, A Strange Arrangement, Hawthorne hits the familiar topic of love from all angles (breakups, desire, mistrust, bliss) with a vocal dexterity as passionate as it is wide-ranging. As a multi-instrumentalist, the Ann Arbor-bred singer/producer doesn't slack on the organics either, coloring each song with a different vintage-minded vibe.
