In Hu Yang's photograph Shanghai Living, a young Chinese man rests in his room, his surroundings hinting at concepts of individualism, tradition, work ethic, freedom, materialism, and leisure. The converging images are a fitting representation of Shanghai, itself a kaleidoscope of ever-shifting ideas and values. In three themes, Reversed Images: Representations of Shanghai and Its Contemporary Material Culture explores convergences and contradictions in the city's romantic past, its present-day symbols of progress, and the society that navigates the two. The diverse assembly of contributing artists provides multiple angles on a city that, despite its rich history, is still defining its identity.
