Of the two shows by young playwrights at Victory Gardens right now, one stumbles a bit over stereotypes and delivers cultural lessons like class was in session; the other, The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, delivers a spectacular, off-the-ropes body slam as it shrewdly spars with cultural exploitation and stereotypes. No joke about the body slam: all the action takes place in the pro wrestling arena, complete with bright lights, spandex, and mega-screens — and against all odds, the conceit works. Well written and charismatically delivered, Chad Deity lays out how the wrestling industry styles itself as a metaphor for America, which takes on new shades of meaning as two quick-talking underdogs (Puerto Rican and Indian, respectively) spot their chance at glory in the ring.
