Oobleck remounts Mickle Maher's dazzlingly inventive play ten years after Maher himself took on the role of Faustus in the character's petulant and terrified final hour. In this two-man show, Faustus does all the speaking, soliloquizing a masterfully intricate, unpredictable account of his 24 years living with Mephistopheles, ranging from absurdist (a screaming match between the two outside a convenience store over whether the devil is crying or merely leaking puss from his eye socket) to ultimately heartbreaking. Colm O'Reilly, Mephistopheles in the original production, now plays Faustus, pacing like a caged animal with spectacularly pliable physicality between his chair and that of the silently seated Mephistopheles, matching the deftness of his unforgettable monologue.
