It can feel as tedious as picking out a new toothpaste when wading through the sea of Death Cab for Postal Decemberists; but when the band that helped carve the Pacific Northwest indie sound still brings the riffs, there's really no need. Fresh off their performance at this year's Pitchfork Music Festival, the Boise, ID touring powerhouse Built to Spill returns to Chicago. Their wonderfully tangled guitar textures are spearheaded by trippy solos that extend and extend (even more so live) into towering celebrations of rock history. Band kingpin Doug Martsch's soaring vocals simply crown the teetering top.
